Science and technology in relation to spirituality in human life
By: Prof. B. Chakraborty
In the modern world, human progress is associated with phenomenal development of Science and Technology. Exploration of nature and utilization of vast natural resource have direct bearing on human life. Utilization of computers are being made not only for scientific investigation, information storage, control and guidance, data transmission & processing and many move application, but also for almost all areas of our life, including business administration, industrial management, banking, traffic control, language transmission, library science, education and many other fields. The works of technological development are there everywhere in the basic needs of human such as food, clothing, shelter, social & cultural life etc. These have been made possible by intensive industrial development through energy from conversion of natural resources and the requirement of energy continues to grow with the positive rate of progress.
With tremendous growth of population & progress of civilization, the utilization of energy is also growing at an alarming rate. The utilization rate gradually gained momentum and there is alarm at present due to depletion of non-renewable sources of energy. The two major causes of energy crisis are faster industralisation and population explosion.
Spirituality, Science & Technology
Some scientists/ technocrats not only have any faith in spiritual methods, they do not even hesitate to ridicule the spiritualists, considering it to be unscientific. It is to be remembered that the knowledge of phenomena is relative and not absolute and Man must create value for himself through action.
The combination of natural sciences and technological sciences have brought in fundamental change in the life-style of mankind in ways which are both beneficial as well as detrimental. Natural science have a definite influence on human Culture as also on man’s conception of the universe and his relation to it. Good & bad, pleasure & pain, life & death are but two sides of the same reality and not absolute experience of different categories.
All scientific theories and laws are approximate and absolute. Through studies and culture reduces error due to approximation, but it is improbable that it will ever become absolute. Science is accepted because it satisfies human reasons and abide by consistency of logic. Search for absolute values is unbounded as human intelligence is a product of matter and is relative in character. Intelligence cannot demonstrate what is absolute but in discussive way can indicate it.
In this great age it is noticed that the concept of spirituality and the principles of exact Sciences are moving from divergence to cultivergence. Reconditioning of thinking process cannot be totally derived by deliberate cultivation, based on objective reasoning only that human quality improvement can be induced through exercise of Culturalisation.
It is felt that in the midst of this great time, the people everywhere are restless to change the socio-economic and environmental condition of life. Human mind is posing a challenge to their own position during recent past. The pattern of development and progress propagated by the type of political thoughts all around, which itself is blind about humanness and this is the source of the crisis.
Now it is to be decided whether our drive should be strongest for the increase in standard of life or for human quality improvement and the decision making process must be based on reasoning as because it will have unbounded implications.
