Social Impact of MGNREGA: A study on Gomati district
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act abbreviated as MGNREGA is an act of law and was formulated on 25th August 2005. The Leaders of the country and the protectors of law realized that without complete growth of the rural areas in the country, India cannot achieve its dreams.
The Objectives of MGNREGA are:
Providing unskilled work for rural India in the rural areas.
Ensuring complete openness and ownership in the governance.
Improvising the entire system of democracy.
Ensuring sustainable development by developing the natural resources of land and water.
Providing an important role to the Panchayati raj.
MGNREGA was introduced in Gomati District in the year 2007. Since its inception it has become a great force for the development of the district. It has tremendous effect in the rural economy of the District. In the Gomati District at present there are 86181 job card holders. In the financial year 2014-2015 a total of 76,81,402 mandays were generated by using a fund of Rs1,33,98,54,704. In average 96.04 mandays were generated per job card holder. Along with mandays hundreds of durable assets were also created in the Distric. Many roads, banana plantation, lemon plantation, pineapple plantation, sericulture, box curlert , steel foot bridge were created under MGNREGA . This has improved the condition of the villagers. The main agenda of MGNREGA is to provide a decent lifestyle to the people of rural India by ensuring at least 100 days of work on wage system in every 365 days. In Gomati district focus was to improve and develop the most basic natural resources of land and water. MGNREGA contributes to benefit the poor with a special inclination to develop land and water. This has made life easy for the families of poor farmers and villagers as they are able to earn better and do not have to move to town to earn their bread and butter.Gomati District has 8 Blocks of which 4 are purely ADC Block and three are mixed block. One block namely Tepania is a purely non-ADC Block. The mandays created by different blocks during 2014-15 is as follows:
The overall performance of the district during the year 2014-15 has been noteworthy because as many as 96.04 mandays were generated by the rural work force of Gomati District. Due to the successful implementation of MGNREGA many socio economic problems are waning in the District. The problem of begging has been totally absent for the last few years. The dropout rate has become nil in the district. The demand for manual labour has risen considerably. The instances of petty theft have also reduced. In the district most of the people who worked in MGNREGA are women folk (53%).Again 15.79% of workers belong to SC and 51.01% work force belongs to ST. So, from the data it is quite obvious that the benefit of MGNREGA has reached both poorer and weaker section of the people. Thus MGNREGA has been successfully implemented in the district ushering a era of hope for poor villagers.
