International Mother Language Day celebrated at Tripura

Agartala, 21st February, 2014: International Mother Language Day is observed all over Tripura.The state level programme was held at Umakanta Academy ground in a befitting manner.ICA minister Bhanulal Saha and Mayor of AMC Prafullajit Sinha paid floral tributes to the martyrs who laid down their lives for the sake of their mother tongue.Thousands of school children took part in this celebration.  International Mother Language Day is observed annually on 21st February worldwide to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. It was first announced by UNESCO on 17 November 1999. In the 1952 peaceful  students from different educational institutions such as Dhaka University , Jagannath University , Dhaka Medical College were demonstrating for recognition of their language Bengali as one of the two national languages of the then Pakistan. But the students were shot and killed by police in Dhaka. The news of  killing of innocent students spread like wild fire all over the world. After this brutal incident 21st February was being observed as “Matri Bhasa Divas” in Bangladesh and different parts of the world.UNO has recognized the movement of the people. International Mother Language Day has been observed all over the world on 21st every year since 2000 February to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. This day is celebrated just like a festival in Bangladesh, West Bengal, Tripura, Assam and other parts of the world.
